Originally introduced in 1972, the EMD GP38-2 has become the most significant four axle locomotive model in recent years. The locomotive featured dash 2 modular electronics and a non-turbocharged 645E 16-cylinder diesel power plant that provided 2,000 horsepower. During its production life, over 2,200 of these units were produced.
